BCS MPs leave solemn sitting dedicated to 30th anniversary of adoption of Constitution

The members of the parliamentary group of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists left the solemn sitting dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution. It happened after the leader of the group, Vlad Batrîncea, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, delivered a speech saying that “unfortunately, there are not many reasons to rejoice at on the 30th anniversary of the Constitution, which is not fully respected,” IPN reports.

Vlad Batrîncea noted that the BCS group did not plan to attend this meeting, but they came “only out of respect for the supreme law and out of respect for those who contributed to the drafting and approval of the Constitution, which is the bible of the country and the foundation of the state.”

According to him, justice in the Republic of Moldova, which according to the Constitution must be free, is in fact at the beck and call of politicians. “What freedom and dignity are we talking about when dozens of media outlets are closed during a state of emergency, without a final court decision, when the state of the Republic of Moldova opens new institutions that have a single purpose – the institutionalization of censorship. As for the Constitutional Court, I will not refer now to the composition of this Court, which is very close to the ruling party, but the Constitutional Court did not find any violations of human rights, violations of the Constitution in the two and a half years of the state of emergency, when we notified the high court for several times,” says the leader of the BCS group.

In his opinion, the whole case law of the Constitutional Court must be revised so that there is continuity of the law, predictability, and the Constitution dominates. “Why is the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova needed? It is necessary for all the political struggles to be conducted constitutionally, amidst pluralism of opinions and in free competition. But can we talk about free and fair elections today in the Republic of Moldova? Can we say that the citizen’s right to vote and to stand as a candidate at election is respected? There are a lot of problems that are simply ignored by the current Constitutional Court,” said the Deputy Speaker.

The solemn sitting was opened with the parade of the Guard of Honor and the playing of the state anthem. MPs, ministers, former heads of state Petru Lucinschi and Nicolae Timofti, as well as ex-MPs who took part in the meeting of July 29, 1994 are present in the hall. The event is also attended by senators from Romania, members of the Constitutional Court, the Superior Council of Magistracy and the Superior Council of Prosecutors, heads of state institutions and authorities, representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to Moldova and of the academic community.

The Day of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova is marked annually on July 29. The supreme law was adopted by Parliament on July 29, 1994 and took effect on August 27, 1994.
