BCS protests at CEC against initiative on postal voting

Members and sympathizers of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) protested in front of the Central Election Commission against the PAS’ initiative concerning the implementation of postal voting. They asked that the CEC should not approve the draft law to introduce postal voting in the U.S. and Canada, IPN reports.

BCS MP Vlad Batrîncea said that on March 21 Parliament will examine the bill to pilot postal voting in the U.S. and Canada for Moldova’s diaspora. According to him, cyberattacks took place in a number of countries in which postal voting was applied and many countries gave up electronic and postal voting. In Austria, the presidential election was annulled due to postal voting.

He considers that in Moldova, by intending to implement this type of vote they aim to rig the elections or to discriminate against voters. The suffrage is universal and the voting conditions must be the same everywhere, no matter where the country’s citizens are, and one category of voters cannot be privileged by discriminating against another category. The idea is inappropriate and Parliament must withdraw this initiative.

Also, Vlad Batrîncea believes that the CEC, which is an independent institution as the law provides, must say that in the conditions existing in the Republic of Moldova, postal voting is a dangerous exercise and that all the citizens must vote in equal conditions. The responsibility for conducting elections belongs to the CEC, not to Parliament.

BCS MP Alla Pilipetskaya said that the current authorities have trampled democracy, laws and citizens’ rights. “The authorities are looking for new ways to deceive the citizens. Now they’ve come up with postal voting. They will do anything to keep power. With their dirty hands they want to take away the people’s right to choose. We must not give Sandu and PAS even a chance. Not a single vote for them. We are in favor of fair elections,” noted the MP.

The Cabinet on March 20 approved a draft law on the implementation of postal voting for this autumn’s elections in the United States and Canada. The Central Election Commission is expected to pronounce on this bill on Wednesday, after 4 p.m.
