Bill on mixed electoral system also adopted in first reading

The bill on the mixed-member electoral system registered by the Party of Socialists on the initiative of President Igor Dodon was passed by Parliament in the first reading on May 5. The mixed-member electoral system envisions the election of MPs by the 50:50 formula, based on party lists and constituencies, IPN.

After the vote, the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities met to consider the possibility of merging this bill with the Democrats’ bill on the uninominal voting system, which was also adopted in the first reading.

Socialist MP Vlad Batrancea said that if the mixed-member electoral system is not introduced, the Party of Socialists reserves the right not to take part in the parliamentary elections and to mount protests.
