The only concrete result of Prime Minister Vlad Filat’s visit to Russia could be the identification of a candidate for the post of Moldovan ambassador to Russia. The opinion was voiced by analyst Igor Botan, head of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT). “We can expect that after this visit the government in Chisinau will identify a candidate for the position of ambassador to Russia. I’m skeptical about other successes”, stated Igor Botan.
The analyst said that Vlad Filat wanted this visit a lot. He managed to meet Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev at the opening of the London Olympics and convinced Medvedev to grant him a meeting. “I think it is a very important visit. Russia is an important economic, commercial and political partner, that’s why it is good for the Prime Minister to have such meetings, to discuss a large spectrum of issues, to learn Russia’s stance and to explain the Moldovan Government’s attitude, thus contributing to finding a balance in reciprocal interests”, said Botan. As regards the Transnistrian issue, he doubts that the visit will bring anything new or significant.
According to the analyst, a potential success of the visit would be if the Prime Minister demanded the extradition of Russian blogger Eduard Bagirov, suspected of participation in the events of April 2009. “As a citizen, I would like the Prime Minister to do this very important thing and namely to convince the Russian leaders to arrest and extradite Eduard Bagirov, whom the Prosecutor General’s Office believes responsible for the violent actions of April 7”, added Igor Botan
The Moldovan Prime Minister will be in Moscow between September 10 and 12. During the visit, Vlad Filat will meet with President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev and with other high-ranked Russian officials.
