The chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Iurie Ciocan said that the Commission has technical capacities to implement any type of electoral system existing in the world. The statement was made during public debates on a bill providing for the institution of the uninominal vote in legislative elections, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“This bill has many pluses, but also many minuses. When I analyzed it, I discovered a number of technical faults. The CEC is ready to suggest solutions for eliminating the procedural drawbacks,” Iurie Ciocan said in the debates.
He also said that the Commission will implement any electoral system that will be approved by the MPs. “We consider that a number of legislative initiatives should be merged into one, especially because we also proposed a bill on the financing of political parties. We may even adopt a new Election Code,” said the CEC chairman. He stressed that 33 laws with amendments to the Election Code passed in 1997 have been adopted so far.
Vlad Plahotniuc, the deputy head of the Democratic Party, put forward a bill, suggesting that the lawmakers should be elected by direct vote, while the country should be divided into 101 constituencies that will include the Transnistrian region.
