The Central Election Commission’s refusal to register the initiative group for organizing the referendum on the abrogation of the mixed electoral system initiated by civil society is a proof of the usurpation of power and full control held by the Democratic Party (PDM) over the state institutions, the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) says in a press statement. The party condemns the CEC’s decision, describing is as illegal, IPN reports.

According to the PLDM, the keeping of the mixed electoral system when society and the foreign partners oppose it generates questions as to the PDM’s intentions and the correctness of the future election campaign. The CEC turned into an institution that obeys the power, while the conservation of the pseudo-supremacy of the Democratic Party is immortal and illegal.

The PLDM requests the embassies working in Chisinau, the European and international institutions to treat the CEC’s refusal to register the initiative group as a serious attack on democracy. It calls on Parliament as the expression of the people’s sovereignty to analyze the Commission’s decision and on the President as the guarantor of sovereignty to stop being the servant of political parties and to remember that he was elected by a majority of votes and should thus promote the interests of the people. The PLDM also called upon civil society to continue to struggle for the right to live in a democratic country.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) on January 12 rejected the application to register the initiative group for holding the national legislative referendum on the abrogation of the law by which changes were made to the Election Code and the mixed electoral system was introduced. The Commission invoked irregularities and violations of the Election Code as it established that the proceedings of the assembly to constitute the initiative group contained contradictory data. Also, non-concordances were identified when counting the votes of participants.
