CIJ: Media coverage of torture phenomenon is inadequate
National mass media doesn’t investigate and doesn’t cover enough the phenomenon of torture in Moldova. The opinion belongs to the members of the Center of Investigative Journalism, who note that most newspaper articles on torture appear when the law enforcement agencies issue press releases, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The report “Covering cases of torture and ill-treatment in state institutions” is based on monitoring 20 papers and found only 338 articles related to torture cases that were published over a period of 9 months.
The same report shows that journalists write more about the events of April 2009, about the torture cases committed then in police commissariats and about the Communist retaliation. At the same time, cases of violence in the Army and ill-treatment in psychiatric hospitals are scarcely covered by newspapers.
CIJ director Cornelia Cozonac says that journalists don’t collaborate with the the National Anti-torture Mechanism, who could provide details about some cases and useful consultations regarding the proper writing of materials.
The press monitoring report was developed by CIJ as part of the media campaign “Journalists for eliminating torture and protecting victims of torture and ill-treatment”, with the support of the EU-funded Small Grants Program 2011.
