The conflicts inside the ruling alliance in Moldova remain within the natural processes and similar to those in other countries until they do not cause long-term instability that can frighten off foreign investors, U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Asif Chaudhry said in a meeting of the Chisinau Press Club last Friday. The diplomat was asked to forecast what concerns the conflicts inside the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) can generate and what effects this can have on the aims pursued by the alliance. ”If this kind of activities can cause long-term instability, the state of affairs can drive potential investors and partners that are ready to invest in this country away. In such a case, it would be a problem and the parties would have to address and solve it,” said the Ambassador. According to him, the recent events inside the AEI are not different from the processes taking place in other countries. “But the reality is that until there is a coalition government and an alliance that includes parties with different views that represent a wide, right, center and center-right political spectrum, there will be dissentions. What the given parties should do is to together deal with the problems confronting the people. The member parties of the AEI have a common element. They all pledged to bring Moldova closer to the EU. There may be certain past disagreements that should be also addressed,” said Asif Chaudhry. The Ambassador commended Moldova for the progress made in building up the democratic institutions after it declared its independence. “If we compare Moldova with other countries, we can say that it achieved results and I’ll explain why. The leaders of this country were persons born and raised in the Soviet Union, except for a period of two-three years. Despite this, there is continuous progress and there appear new political parties. I saw that during the last five years the process of building political parties became more solid. A result is that the people in this country became wiser. One of the indicators is that the number of persons who voted for political parties that did not manage to develop an agreeable infrastructure has continuously decreased in the last two-three elections. The number of so-called lost votes has diminished significantly. I think this is a sign of the maturity of the political parties and the political process. But there is yet a lot to be done and the U.S. committed itself to supporting the political processes and political parties in Moldova,” he said. Asif Chaudhry confirmed for the journalists attending the meeting that his tenure in Chisinau is coming to an end. “I want to say that I will leave this country with nice memories and that an important part of the project of my life here in Moldova concerns the democratic reforms, in particular the freedom of expression. I want to thank you for the progress made in the last two-three years. The country advances at a high pace in order to remain on the path to progress. It is an honor for me to be part of this transition,” said the U.S. Ambassador in Chisinau.
