Current problems can prevent reformation of justice, expert

The EU’s funds intended for the reform of Moldova’s justice system may be used to solve current problems even if Parliament approves the justice sector reform strategy in time, Corneliu Gurin, expert of the Association for Participative Democracy ADEPT, stated for Info-Prim Neo. “I see no problems for this strategy not to be approved by mid-November, as the EU demands. As far as I know, the EU’s funds will not be disbursed soon because the process lasts. The EU does not want only the strategy, but also definite and efficient steps. It is not excluded that €50 million of the EU’s funds may be used for other problems than justice,” said Corneliu Gurin. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the head of the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities Victor Popa said the justice sector reform strategy has been included in the agenda of the next sittings of the legislature and it would be approved as soon as possible. The European Union expects that the justice sector reform strategy will be approved by the middle of November. If this term is not respected, with the head of state not being elected and the early parliamentary elections approaching, the financing to the given sector may stop coming. Related statements were made by the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Dirk Schuebel in a meeting of the Chisinau Press Club.
