‘Eggs without colorant’ for sale at market

The buyers can now find eggs with a more bright color of the yolk at the Central Market in Chisinau. Some people look for them, while others avoid them as they are afraid the producers may add certain substances to the hens’ food in order to obtain such a color so that the eggs look more ‘homemade’. There are even placards with the words “Eggs without colorant” at some of the stalls. Asked by Info-Prim Neo why she placed such a placard, a seller explained that at the beginning the eggs with yellow-reddish yolk were in demand, but now the people are concerned that they may be unsafe. “A number of persons complained that they felt sick after they ate eggs with such yolk. They said they had stomachaches and headaches,” argued Natalia Matei. Another seller, Dina Stepan said that since the buyers started to ask if the eggs contain colorants or not, the vendors selling eggs with yolk of a more vivid color do not more exhibit samples. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the head of the Agriculture Ministry’s Market Policy Division Vitalie Ciobanu denied that the producers use substances to make the yolk of the eggs brighter. “It is a fantasy. Nothing like that can happen,” he stated. Ion Bazgu, director general of the poultry-breeding company “Avicola-Moldova”, said that such practices exist, but not in Moldova. “In come of the countries, where there is a shortage of corn, they use substances to give the egg yolk a brighter color. In Moldova, such substances are not used as we have enough corn,” said Ion Bazgu. The color of the yolk does not influence the price. Ten eggs cost 14-16.5 lei at the market.
