Dacia, Olympia qualify for next Europa League round
The Moldovan clubs Dacia Chisinau and Olympia Balti qualified for the next qualifying round of the Europa League on Thursday, July 8, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Both teams qualified on the away goals rule, after Dacia drew 0-0 at home with the Montenegrins Zeta and Olympia tied 1-1 away with Khazar Lenkoran.
The game was quite difficult for Dacia, especially after Victor Bulat was sent off in the first half. Yet the Yellow Wolves' defense played exemplarily as did goalkeeper Eugen Matiughin. Despite mounting pressure from the Balkans toward the end of the match, the game remained goalless, which was enough to secure Dacia a place in the next round. This marked Igor Dobrovolski's first success as Dacia manager.
Olympia continued the tradition of Moldovan teams of defeating Azerbaijani clubs in European competitions. Playing away, the Balti-based team took the lead early in the game thanks to Jean-Jerome Robens. The hosts' late equalizer amounted to nothing more than a consolation goal.
In the second qualifying round, Dacia will play Kalmar (Sweden) and Olympia will encounter Dynamo Bucharest. At this stage, a third Moldovan club – Iskra-Stal Rybnitsa – will join the competition to play another Swedish team, Elfsborg. The matches are scheduled for July 15 and 22.
