The July 5 event staged by a number of unionist groups in central Chisinau, called the Great National Assembly, aroused debates in Parliament. The Socialist MPs asked questioning the administration of the Security and Intelligence Service (SIS), the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, saying this event was unconstitutional as it was held with the aim of disseminating calls to liquidate Moldova as a state, IPN reports.

“We consider such events represent a great danger to our state. We demand questioning the managers of the SIS, PGO and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the holding of this event. We think these bodies didn’t cope with the situation and tacitly supported the unconstitutional and anti-state activities,” said Socialist MP Vlad Batrancea.

The head of the Liberal faction Mihai Ghimpu said that when it is about the basic human rights, nobody can intervene. “You should comply as each of us has the right to promote what we want,” stated the Liberal leader.

The Party of Communists’ chairman Vladimir Voronin said nobody is against mounting protests, but the problem resides in the fact that more than 1,000 people with residence in Romania came and promoted revolution.

The head of the Democratic parliamentary group Marian Lupu said there are two currents that threaten statehood in Moldova – a radical unionist one and a left one promoting the integration into the Eurasian Union, which also implies the liquidation of statehood. “I think the special services should do their job. No democratic system allows citizens of other countries to come and dictate the rules,” he stated.

Vlad Filat, who heads the Liberal Democrat Party, said the state institutions acted appropriately on July 5 as public order was maintained. “I think we should further encourage the state institutions and make sure by law that citizens’ rights are fully respected,” he stated.

The Socialists’ proposal didn’t garner the number of votes needed to be included in the agenda.
