Deputy Speaker: We will vote draft law on gender quotas

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Liliana Palihovici, of the Liberal Democratic Party, said the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group will unconditionally vote the draft law that introduces gender quotas in the final reading. In the third Public Forum “Partnership for an Inclusive and Prosperous Moldova – Women Count!”, the official noted that the first two editions of the forum were more declarative, but now they aim to change things and the next forum will start with the MPs’ report on what was done to solve the problems faced by the women, IPN reports.

“We agreed that the assumed commitments are not of the participating women, but of the teams. “My colleagues insisted that we should vote unconditionally the bill on gender quotas and the amendments that condemn the sexist message. We will vote unanimously. We also have a firm response in support of the ratification of the Istanbul Convention that condemns violence. We pledged to improve the mechanism for protecting the victims of violence,” stated Liliana Palihovici.

The Lib-Dems will support all the ideas suggested by women entrepreneurs, especially as regards the amendments of the legislation concerning the length of the maternity leave and the size of the child benefit. “We will consider the possibility of providing babysitters paid by the state. We also aim to improve the mechanism for purchasing social services from NGOs. I was impressed by the augments provided by the Roma women, who want greater clarity as regards community mediators. We want the persons of all the ethnic groups to feel well in the country that is theirs too,” said the Deputy Speaker.

She noted that they will also consider amending the nomenclature of professions, as the migrant women, the women entrepreneurs, the women with special needs and the victims of violence asked. The covering of the dental treatment for elderly persons with mandatory health insurance funds is another issue that will be addressed.

Liliana Palihovici added that this forum is a first step towards approaching the identified problems and extended discussions on each area will be staged based on the platform of women MPs. A meeting of the women MPs and women entrepreneurs will most probably take place in May.
