Devastation of Parliament and Presidential Buildings cost state millions

It is three years of the April 7, 2009 events, when the Parliament and Presidential Buildings were devastated, but the lawmakers and the President have not yet returned to their offices. During the first two years, money for repair had been allocated from the state budget, but in 2011 and 2012 no funds were earmarked and the works stopped. Ecaterina Grigorean, press officer of the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction, which is in charge of the repair of the Parliament Building, has told Info-Prim Neo that the repair works were initially assessed at 250 million lei. About 76 million lei had been invested over the first two years. When the money was spent, the works were halted. The works performed in the Parliament Building until now included building of the resistance structure of the annex, where there is the meeting hall, and laying of the internal and external piping systems and the floor. Approximately 370 million lei more is needed to finish the repair works and to outfit the offices. According to Ecaterina Grigorean, if money is allocated, the building will be ready by the end of 2012. The State Chancellery is responsible for the repair of the Presidential Building. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, deputy secretary general of the Government Eduard Banaruc said the repair works in the Presidential Building also stopped because of lack of financing. About 74 million lei was spent in 2009 and another approximately 24 million lei in 2010. Eduard Banaruc said the repair works were 50% fulfilled. In winter, the building was heated so as to preserve what was done. A sum of 112 million lei is needed to complete the repair works and equip the offices. The works can be resumed only if the state budget is amended and the necessary amounts are allocated. But this subject hasn’t been yet discussed. The contractors said the costs should be reassessed as the prices have changed since 2009. On April 7, 2009, the young people staged protests against the results of the April 5 elections. The peaceful protests degenerated into violence and the Parliament and Presidential Buildings were destroyed. Several hundred young persons were arrested and tortured in police commissariats. The authorities have not yet established who is to blame for those events.
