Differing opinions about union with Romania

Unionist organizations on March 27 will make effort to restore the People’s Council by the model of the legislative body that 98 years ago voted for Bessarabia’s union with Romania. On the other hand, the opponents accuse the unionists of ‘treason’. Contradictory opinions on the issue were stated in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Anatol Ursu, chairman of the movement “Moldova’s Youth”, said that more than 2,000 delegates from different parts of the country are expected to come to Chisinau to take part in the congress to set up the People’s Council on March 27. “During 25 years, the executive bodies of the state showed gross irresponsibility. If the people want the union with Romania, the Parliament will have to accept it. The union with Romania means better living conditions for the Moldovans. I feel insulted and marginalized when some accuse me that I’m against the state,” he stated.

Victor Alexeev, head of the Organization of Romania’s Social-Democratic Party in Moldova, also considers that the union with Romania is a chance for the Republic of Moldova.

Nicolae Pascari, chairman of the youth movement “Voevod”, accused the unionist leaders of being against statehood and of betraying the country. “The union with Romania would lead to a civil war similar to that witnessed in Transnistria in 1992. There are a number of nationalities living in Moldova and not all of them want to live in Romania. The problems must be solved here, not in Bucharest,” he said.
