The Balti Court of Appeals Friday upheld the decision of the primary court that validated Dorin Chirtoaca’s seat of mayor of Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Liberal Party’s representative in court Ion Casian said after the hearing that it is a correct and legal decision, while the arguments stated by the Communist Party in its application were rejected justifiably. The head of the Chisinau district electoral council Iulian Balan said the court made a right decision.
After the decision was pronounced, the Communist Party’s representative Sergiu Sarbu said the PCRM will sue Moldova at the European Court of Human Rights because the national legislation was flouted. He also said that there will be a surprise at political level in 3-4 months, but did not give details. Sergiu Sarbu stressed that the judges passed the decisions under the pressure exerted by the Liberal Party.
The PCRM’s former candidate for mayor, MP Igor Dodon issued a press statement, saying the court’s decision surprised and disappointed him. “Unfortunately, we must say that the judiciary in Moldova became hostage of the political power and acts under direct and indirect pressure. Ghimpu and the Liberals instituted a kind of political terrorism against the legal system and the control bodies. The Liberals use blackmail and threats with dismissal in order to obtain decisions favorable to them, which is evidently a flagrant illegality. The law in Moldova today is made by those like Ghimpu & Co. We do not want to imagine what such a situation can result in,” said Igor Dodon. The MP announced he will give a news conference on July 11 and will provide more details.
Judge Gheorghe Scutelnic, who examined the case, said the judges have not been pressed and threatened, while the judges of the Balti Court of Appeals are correct and objectives. “There is no justice made in Balti, Chisinau or Bender. There is fair justice in Moldova. The court’s judges have not been involved in the cases lost by Moldova at the ECHR,” said the judge.
Dorin Chirtoaca won the elections by 50.6% of the vote. His Communist opponent Igor Dodon polled 49.4% of the ballot.
