Duration of studies for a number of health programs to be reduced

In order to provide the health system with qualified specialists, the authorities suggest reducing the duration of higher education studies for particular programs in the field of health. Also, in order to offer the possibility of training a larger number of highly qualified specialists, it is proposed to reduce the duration of postgraduate studies, through clinical secondariat for some of the specialties. In this case, the duration of studies will be between one and two years, depending on the specialty, by the decision of the Ministry of Health. The provisions are contained in an amendment approved by the Cabinet, IPN reports.

The amendment to the bill to modify a number of normative documents in the field of education was drafted by MP Adrian Belyi. According to the initiative, the healthcare system has a pressing need for qualified medical staff with higher education in the field of “Health”, the training for which now lasts for four-six years. International practice in this field, including in the countries of the European Union, shows that bachelor’s degree programs in Public Health, Radiological Technology, Optometry, etc. can be carried out during three years, with the subsequent placement of graduates in the labor market to satisfy the needs of the health system.

Under the amendment, the training of medical specialists through clinical secondariat for particular narrow specialties or specialties requiring deeper specialization, such as neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, oncological fields, etc., can last for one year only. This will facilitate the provision of the health system with highly qualified medical staff.

According to another amendment, endorsed by the Cabinet, for higher education programs in the fields of information and communication technology, journalism and communication, audiovisual techniques and media production, higher education institutions can employ for teaching well-known researchers and practitioners from Moldova or other countries, with valuable experience in the field. Thus, it will no longer be mandatory for these persons to hold doctorates.
