The Energy Community Secretariat will soon open an office in Chisinau, Infrastructure Minister Andrei Spinu posted on Facebook after discussing with Artur Lorkowski, the new director of the Energy Community.
The Energy Community has provided considerable support to Moldova over time. The Energy Community Secretariat supported our country in transposing the EU energy legislation. There are also future commitments, both from the Moldovan authorities and from the Secretariat, to create a transparent and fair energy market in Moldova.
The Energy Community is an association between European Union member states and those of South-Eastern Europe, which aims to create a common electricity and gas market. It was established by the signing of the Treaty of Athens in October 2005 and started on 1 July 2006. In addition to the EU Member States, the European Energy Community also includes the Balkan countries - Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, as well as the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo.
On December 18, 2009, Moldova joined the European Energy Community alongside Ukraine, and in 2010 our country became a full member. Moldova has pledged to amend its energy legislation so that it is in line with European standards. This includes the implementation of the EU’s Third Energy Package, which involves the legal separation of transmission and distribution system operators.
Moldova has also pledged to make a fast transition to a cleaner environment, to an economy based on energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy, and environment-friendly consumer behavior.
