Essence and necessity of copyright protection discussed at roundtable

All the works, either they were made public or not, benefit from protection. Lawyer Ion Țîgănaș, expert in intellectual property protection, in a roundtable meeting said the moral rights (to name, integrity and retraction of the work) do not have a period of validity, while the property rights (to reproduction, public presentation or translation of the work) have a imitated protection period – during the author’s life and 70 years after his/her death. The event was staged by the National Library of the Republic of Moldova in connection with the Science Days, IPN reports.

“We are all authors because we create or created something during our life. This is the first rule of the copyright – that not only known, famous persons who wrote many works are authors. Any person who crates something is an author, no matter what, how and in what volume. That’s why each of us can have this quality of author,” explained the lawyer.

The roundtable meeting entitled “Copyright: From traditional norms to particularities of Internet era” is the first event of the Science Days organized by the National Library together with the Association of Librarians. National Library director general Elena Pintilei said the theme of the event is topical. It is on the agenda both of scientific libraries and of public libraries, especially in creating digital libraries and developing the service “Ask Librarian”. “By this service, our users very often ask for scanned or digital or Xeroxed information and we every time wonder what the limits of copyright are. I think this roundtable meeting will provide responses to many questions put by libraries, consumers of information and institution managers,” stated Elena Pintilei.

Olivia Pîrţac-Goagă, director of the project “Access to Justice in Moldova”, said that the fist cooperation relations with the Assooctauon of Librarians were established as part of the Science Days. “We hope it is the start of cooperation that we will also extend by other activities. Our project aims to increase the people’s access to justice, but this increase or improvement cannot take place without access to information, which is essential for the access to justice. The librarians are that community source that is very close to the citizens and that can help them have access to information and to justice too in a comprehensive way,” stated Olivia Pîrţac-Goagă.

An author is the creator or originator of any written work such as a book or play, and is also considered a writer. More broadly defined, an author is “the person who originated or gave existence to anything” and whose authorship determines responsibility for what was created.

The third edition of the Science Days at the National Library of the Republic of Moldova is held during November 5-11.
