Eurasian course is preferred to European one, poll

If the Moldovans had to choose at a referendum between the European Union (EU) and the Customs Union (CU), 42% of them would select the CU, while 39% - the EU, shows the Public Opinion Barometer presented by the Institute for Public Policy. 12% of the respondents haven’t yet decided what direction Moldova should follow, IPN reports.

Asked if Moldova would gain more advantages or disadvantages if it joined the EU or the CU, 22% said they are convinced that the entry into the European Union would bring only advantages, while 24% are sure that the joining of the Customs Union would bring only advantages. Some 12% of those polled consider the entry into the EU would bring only disadvantages, while 14% consider the status of member of the CU would bring only disadvantages.

The poll shows that 52% of those surveyed believe the neutrality is the best solution for ensuring the country’s security. 16% of the respondents are for joining NATO, 11% for joining the Collective Security Treaty Organization, while 21% didn’t know how to answer this question.

However, if a referendum on joining NATO was held next Sunday, 47% of those polled would vote against, 19% would vote for, 18% do not yet know, 9% said they would not take part in the plebiscite, while 7% didn’t give an answer.

As to the Moldovans’ confidence in the world political leaders, 33% of those interviewed said they trust Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, while 13-14% trust the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The Moldovans trust the least the president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, followed by the President of the U.S. Barack Obama.
