Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta, besides having the task of inspecting the projects implemented with the financial support of the Romanian Government, comes to Chisinau to influence the Moldovan voters to support him in the presidential elections of Romania, Victor Juc, vice director of the Institute of Legal and Political Research of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, said in the program “Place for dialogue” on the public station “Radio Moldova”.

According to Juc, the political players from Romania didn’t forget that Traian Basescu won his second term as President owing to the votes gained outside the country, including in Moldova. “I think that Victor Ponta wants to attract Moldovan voters on his side. Over the last few years, we saw Ponta taking concrete actions in favor of Moldova, but it’s not excluded that the planned visit by Traian Basescu, which will be the last one in his position as President of Romania in the current tenure, will also count,” stated Victor Juc.

The expert also said that the Moldovans holding Romanian nationality usually vote for the candidates representing the political right. But the Moldovan-Romanian relations over the last few years became more pragmatic than emotive and Premier Ponta contributed to their development. Thus, the electors in Moldova may vote for the candidate of the political left too.

As to the participation of President Nicolae Timofti in the Summit of CIS Heads of States, Victor Juc said it is beneficial. “Though this body is no longer credible, as long as Moldova is a member of it, Timofti’s participation in its meetings is justified. There are also other arguments, like the bilateral meetings and discussions held there. Given that Russia imposed a ban on the import of Moldovan products, we should keep the other markets in the East. I think President Timofti made a correct decision,” stated the expert.
