Those who will intentionally roll back the miles on the odometer to conceal a vehicle’s true mileage will be fined. Such a provision is contained in a bill to amend the Contravention Code that was passed by Parliament in the final reading, IPN reports.
The bill was drafted by unaffiliated MPs Igor Vremea and Artur Reshetnikov. According to them, the unscrupulous used-car sellers roll back the miles on a car’s odometer to show low mileage, which is taken into account when assessing the technical state and thus influences the price. A vehicle that travelled a lower number of kilometers is more attractive to buyers.
Under the bill, the odometer roll-back by a private individual will be penalized with a fine of 5,000 to 7,500 lei. In the case of legal entities, the fine will be 17,500 to 22,500 lei.
The law will take effect in two months of its publication in the Official Gazette. In the period, the Government is to make its regulations compliant with this law.
