First national screening reveals precancerous processes in nearly 17% of women

76 women out of over 24,000 examined had breast cancer, and 4 had uterine cancer, as shown by the first national screening conducted by the National Health Insurance Corporation (CNAM) in five districts in the country, Info-Prim Neo reports. The screening was launched in May 2011 and will continue until May 2012, and is administered to all the women of all ages who consider themselves healthy. In the first seven months of the screening, over 24,000 women were examined out of 73,000 planned. In 13.2% of them the tests revealed precancerous processes in the mammary gland, and in 3.63% others in the uterus. The Mandatory Health Insurance Fund will spend on this prophylactic examination around 14 million lei. CNAM has stressed in a statement that the success of treating cancer depends on how early the disease is diagnosed. This year, CNAM has allocated to the Cancer Institute, the country's only specialized medical establishment, about 112 lei for inpatient care and a further 10 million for outpatient care. The number of cancer patients is growing at an alarming pace; each year over 1,200 women are diagnosed with breast and uterine cancer and 40% of them die because the disease is detected too late.
