Five personalities have been immortalized on five postage stamps that form part of the series “Anniversaries-Commemorations. Illustrious Personalities”. The stamps were put into circulation on January 15, 2010. The measure forms part of the postage stamps issuing program for 2010 formulated by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology.
The stamps are dedicated to poet Grigore Vieru (1935- 2009), poet Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889), princess and teacher Natalia Dadiani (1865-1903), Russian athlete and circus artist Ivan Zaikin (1880-1948), and soprano Maria Cebotari (1910-1949).
Minister of Information and Communication Technology Alexandru Oleinic said the postage stamps launched today and the over 700 stamps issued earlier will sent messages to the whole world through the agency of letters.
The personalities were selected in concert with the civil society, especially the Writers Union of Moldova. The Union's vice president Arcadie Suceveanu said he welcomes the decision to launch the stamps on the birthday of the great poet Mihai Eminescu. He also said it was the fourth stamp that represents Eminescu at different ages. “The picture on this stamp shows Eminescu at the age of 19 and was printed in Prague.”
The series of stamps was launched by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology together with the state-run company Moldova's Post Office. About 12-15 sets of postage stamps are issued in Moldova every year. 715 postage stamps have been put into circulation since 1991 until present.
