The main problem faced by people release from jail is that society rejects them. Experts in the field say that there is a stereotype according to which all former inmates are dangerous, and that’s why society cannot accept them. In such conditions, lacking any support, some of the release convicts break down, committing a crime and ending up back in jail. Info-Prim Neo reports. Vladimir Popa, head of the Central Probation Office attached to the Penitentiary Institutions Department, told a meeting of the Central Coordinating Council for the social adaptation of people released from prison that according to a study 47% of respondents consider the ex-convicts a danger to society. “Perhaps the person that is released from jail has changed, has acknowledged his mistake but we reject them” said Vladimir Popa. According to the expert, another problem that the former inmates face is unemployment. Most often, they simply lack the necessary training or aren’t accepted by employers. Many ex-cons don’t have a place to live because their families refuse to communicate with them. The experts think that the social training and adaptation of people release from jail takes places over their entire sentence. Nevertheless, 3 to 6 months prior to the release, the probation counselor intervenes, choosing who needs more thorough preparation. In such cases, the inmates are involved in reintegration activities. A solution for preventing relapse could be developing some psychological-social programs for the convicts, thinks Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Moldovanu. According to the official, the state bodies and the ordinary citizens must contribute to the reintegration of the ex-convicts in the society. Besides, better coordination between the involved institutions is needed. At the beginning of this year, over 500 convicts were on parole. 10% of them have committed crimes again and returned to jail.
