FSM president Marcel Darie supports uninominal voting initiative

Moldova’s Salvation Front (FSM) supports the PDM’s initiative to modify the electoral system. In a news conference at IPN, FSM president Marcel Darie said the electoral system should be substituted by a uninominal or mixed voting system.

Marcel Darie considers the initiative to introduce a uninominal voting system presented by the PDM and Vlad Plahotniuc is laudable. He said the current system generates corruption and even political cruising because tens of MPs left the parties with which they entered Parliament and migrated to other parties. Another argument against the current party-list proportional representation system provided by Marcel Darie is the fact that the party leaders sell the best places on the lists of candidates, reminding about the statements made by Veaceslav Platon, who said that he bought his seat of MP.

“There are MPs who never speak on the microphone in Parliament,” stated Marcel Darie. He noted that these MPs do not propose legislative initiatives and do not represent the country’s population in Parliament. The rulers fully disappointed the voters, both those chosen before 2009 and the pro-European ones,” stated Marcel Darie.

The president of Moldova’s Salvation Front said the affiliated political bodies or those managed by the Kremlin combine forces against the uninominal voting system. In this connection, he called on the Security and Intelligence Service to verify if Sergiu Mocanu, Andrei Nastase and Renato Usatui coordinate their activities under the administration of special Russian services.

According to Marcel Darie, simplicity is an advantage of the uninominal voting system. Each constituency will nominate only one candidate and this increases the possibility of social control. The system is attractive to voters, who do not consider the party politics important.

The electoral system proposed by the Democratic Party will give bigger chances to the small and regional parties that represent the local interests of voters, which are not covered by the large parties, stated Marcel Darie, noting that the uninominal or mixed voting system works well in France, the U.S,. the UK, Germany, Ukraine, and Georgia.
