Funding of political parties by state will facilitate women’s access to politics, opinions

The financing of political parties by the state will lead to gender equality in Moldovan politics. Such an opinion was stated in the program “Place for dialogue” on the public station Radio Moldova, IPN reports.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Potang, who is a member of the Liberal Reformist Party (PLR), considers the implementation of the Law on Party Funding will ensure transparency in the process of financing political parties and this will lead to more chances for women who want to run in elections. “It’s known that women are less tolerant towards corruption and all kinds of influences,” she said, assuring that the PLR’s list of candidates will include a sufficient number of women.

Liberal MP Valeriu Munteanu also believes that gender equality in politics can be ensured by the aforementioned law. “The fact that the political parties are not funded by the state contributes to widespread corruption in politics,” he said, adding that at least 30% of the Liberal Party’s candidates for the legislative elections will be women and at least one woman will be among the top five candidates.

He also said that the Liberal Party will vote for the bills that institute a women’s representation quota in politics and that regulate party funding, but will put forward initiatives to renounce the status of neutrality. “We will all be now busy with the election campaign and can wake up with tanks and cannons at the border. We will not be able to explain to them that we are a neutral country,” stated Valeriu Munteanu.
