Gheorghe Brega named acting Premier

Gheorghe Brega, Deputy Prime Minister on social matters in the Strelet Government, was appointed as acting Prime Minister. A decree to this effect was issued by President Nicolae Timofti, IPN reports.

“I signed two decrees – one to accept the resignation of the Strelet Government and another one to name the acting Prime Minister,” Nicolae Timofti told the press, noting that Gheorghe Brega will hold this post until a new Cabinet is sworn in.

The head of state said that he also discussed with Deputy Prime Ministers Natalia Gherman and Stephane Bride. Discussions weren’t held only with Deputy Prime Ministers Victor Osipov, who is now abroad. Gheorghe Brega is his personal choice and no pressure was exerted on him in this regard.

Contacted by journalists, Gheorghe Brega said he cannot have ambitious plans because an acting Premier is limited in his acts. “The best thing is to unite society and to swiftly form a pro-European government,” stated Brega.

The Cabinet headed by Lib-Dem Valeriu Strelet was dismissed by a majority of votes of MP on October 29. The no-confidence motion submitted by the Socialist and Communist lawmakers was also supported by the Democratic MPs.
