MP Mihai Ghimpu, the chairman of the Liberal Party (PL), and Anatol Salaru, the party’s first deputy chairman, had a meeting with His Excellence, Sir Graham Watson, President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE Party), on the sidelines of the ALDE Congress that was held in London on November 28-30, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from the PL.
“His Excellence, Sir Graham Watson, underlined from the start that he was honored by the presence of Mister M.Ghimpu and the PL team at the ALDE 2013 Congress, which plays an important role in joining the efforts of the Liberals with a view to supporting Moldova and the countries from Eastern Europe in joining the EU and in strengthening the Liberals’ role in developing democracy and ensuring the rule of law,” reads the communiqué.
In the discussions, Mihai Ghimpu said that Moldova’s European course mustn’t be interrupted, while the European integration must remain a top priority of the country, as it is for the Liberal Party. “Even if the Liberal Party was removed from power, we continue to fight for the country’s European course, which means that we will fight corruption, appropriation of public funds, smuggling, etc. The fact that Moldova initialed the Association Agreement with the EU is already an important step, while this day is a historical one for the country’s European course. But the initialing is only the beginning. We must do real reforms and ensure the people’s welfare,” stated the Liberal leader.
Sir Watson expressed his confidence that the Liberal Party of Moldova will keep the Liberal flag up with dignity, underlining he is determined to further offer support for Moldova to sign the Association Agreement with the EU in 2014. “I’m confident that your efforts and the party’s efforts are aimed at the European integration. I wish you success and I assure you of my further support and involvement,” said the ALDE President.
Mihai Ghimpu thanked his Excellence for the assistance offered to Moldova in implementing democratic reforms and coming closer to the EU.
