Harsher penalties for corrupting voters
The promising and offering of money, goods or services for making the voters to exercise their electoral rights in a certain way will be punished with a fine of 4,000 to 10,000 lei, ban on holding a certain post for a period of up to three years, or one to five years in prison. Relevant amendments to the Penal Code were approved by the Government on January 16, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Currently, the penalty for corrupting the voters, stipulated by the Penal Code, is 100 to 200 hours of community service or up to three years’ imprisonment.
Under the amendments, the goods that cannot be offered to voters in election campaigns include food products, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and cigarettes.
