Igor Dodon: SCJ decision sets dangerous precedent

President Igor Dodon said the Supreme Court of Justice’s decision of June 25 sets a dangerous precedent and this will have very serious long-term consequences, including for the parliamentary elections, IPN reports. “What is going on now is the result of the nine-year rule by the Euro-unionists. Brussels, the U.S., Bucharest invested politically and financially in these governments, often overlooking the wrongdoings committed during these years, because geopolitics was more important than the quality of governance and the people’s fate,” President Dodon wrote on his Facebook page.

“The chaos and shame we see today in Moldova is the result of the poor administration after 2009. The current unionists, those from the government and those from the opposition, are the political creatures of the “pro-European” governments of these years. They together, those from the parliamentary majority and the protest leaders, formed or welcomed the formation of the alliances for European integration AIE1, AIE2 and AIE3, every time choosing the lesser evil. Now they reap what they sowed.”

Igor Dodon said the healthy forces of the left prepare very seriously for the parliamentary elections. “In practical terms, two post-electoral scenarios start to take shape now already. The first, most probable scenario, is the wining by the Socialists of most of the seats of MP and the formation of the Government by these. For now, all the events, including the discrediting of the Euro-unionists, lead to this scenario that is positive for Moldova. The second possible scenario is the causing of early parliamentary elections immediately after the ordinary elections. Even if the West exerts pressure, as every time, for forming a new pro-European coalition, the citizens will not allow the leaders of the PAS and PPPDA to form an alliance with the PDM and Plahotniuc,” he stated.

According to President Dodon, in such a case the early parliamentary elections are inevitable, possibly simultaneously with the ordinary local elections of 2019. If early elections are held, the Party of Socialists will definitely win most of the seats of MP. As to Chisinau, this will be now the responsibility of the municipal councilors. “I’m sure that Ion Ceban (head of the Socialist group on the Chisinau council,  e.n.) and his team will continue to promote social projects and will deal with the most pressing problems of the townspeople. He was wronged by the abusive court decision as there were filed no complaints against him and the runoffs with the involvement of Ion Ceban should have been rerun in the municipality of Chisinau following the invalidation of the election of Andrei Nastase,” he said.

In the evening of June 25, the Supreme Court of Justice upheld the Appeals Court’s decision to not invalidate the results of the early mayoral elections held recently in Chisinau municipality. Supporters of mayor-elect Andrei Nastase are mounting protests.
