President Igor Dodon in a press briefing on March 1 recalled Moldova’s history, mentioning the moment when Moldova became a member of the UN and announcing the creation of a platform for conciliation between the two banks of the Nistru River.
“Our country has a rich and valuable history,” stated Igor Dodon, noting that the people started to build the state that we today proudly call the Republic of Moldova starting with the rules of Stephan the Great and Dimitrie Cantemir.
The President said that after the victory in the Great Patriotic War, the multinational people of the Soviet Union, which included the Moldovan people, obtained the possibility of building the future in conditions of peace. The United Nations Organization created after World War II became the new platform for a peaceful coexistence of the peoples of the world and remains the central international body through which they the problems of the international community are discussed and solved.
According to Igor Dodon, within the UN Moldova became an active participant in international processes and made new friends and partners all over the world. Meanwhile, it also became a member of a number of important international and regional organizations, such as the Commonwealth of Independent States and the OSCE. Moldova was recognized by about 150 states.
The Head of State also said that the spring and summer of 1992 were shadowed by the tragic events on the Nistru, which claimed hundreds of lives, mutilated thousands of people and drove away thousands of compatriots. He noted we should stop dividing the inhabitant by national criteria such as “natives and foreigners” and should not impose our values and our views on the country and its future on each other.
Igor Dodon also presented the initiative to constitute a social dialogue platform for conciliation between the two sides of the Nistru. “This way we will be able to together contribute to solving problems faced by the people living on both sides of the Nistru,” he stated, without giving details about the organization and functioning of the platform.
