Ilan Shor remains in custody

Mayor of Orhei town Ilan Shor, who is accused of money laundering and swindle, remains in custody. The Chisinau Appeals Court on June 30 rejected the lawyers’ appeal against the decision to hold Ilan Shor on remand for 30 days, IPN reports.

After the hearing, the prosecutor who is investigating the case said that the Court’s decision confirms the soundness of the provided evidence. They asked to keep the suspect in custody because there are particular risks, including that this will influence the witnesses in this case or will hamper the process of collecting proofs..

Ilan Shor’s lawyers said the Court’s decision is groundless and it was confirmed that the arrest was made with violations of the legislation. “Ilan Shor considers himself not guilty. Despite the unfounded arrest, Ilan Shor continues to cooperate with the investigation bodies and makes statements,” said the representative of the defense Denis Ulianov.

According to him, the prosecutor said in the hearing that this case is a resonant one and this shows that the prosecution inclines towards the arguments formulated by the public opinion.

Ilan Shor was brought to the hearing in a bulletproof vest. The doors of the hall where the hearing was held were locked for security reasons.

During the hearing, a group of people demonstrated outside in support of Ilan Shor. They demanded that he should be set free and enumerated his accomplishments as the mayor of Orhei.

Ilan Shor was arrested on June 22 on suspicion of money laundering and swindle when he headed the Administration Board of Banca de Economii. Two days later, the Buiucani Court accepted the prosecutors’ request to remand him in custody for 30 days.
