Is there age discrimination in employment?

“Searching for accountant aged between 22 and 30”, “Hiring consultant aged 25-28”, “Chef under 35”. Job ads frequently stipulate age limits for candidates, even though the law forbids age discrimination in employment. The manager of a restaurant network, looking for an ice-cream maker under 25, told Info-Prim Neo this wasn’t discrimination. This was a holiday job usually taken by students. “Our experience shows that a certain category of people apply for this job and their age doesn’t differ from the one in the ad”, he said. A telecommunications company is looking for a chef in its café, aged under 27. The manager claims he didn’t violate anything and says that a good specialist is trained until 27 years of age. Minister of Labor and Social Protection Valentina Buliga said there was no age discrimination in Moldova, nor should there be any. “The Labor Code doesn’t stipulate anything about such approaches, and chances must be equal for everyone. It is the person’s right to sue the employers who place such ads. Though I get these employers, there must be no discrimination”, declared the Minister. Art. 8 (1) of the Labor Code states that the principle of equality of rights is applied in labor relations. Any discrimination, direct or indirect, by sex, age, race, color of skin, ethnicity, religion, political option, social origin, domicile, disability, HIV/AIDS status, union membership or activity and any other criteria unrelated to professional qualities, is forbidden.
