Parliament adopted in two readings amendments to the Law on the Constitutional Court (CC), which contained provisions that ran counter to the Constitution. The law says that two judges of the CC are named by the head of state, but the Supreme Law provides that this is the entitlement of the Government, IPN reports.
Deputy Minister of Justice Nicolae Esanu said in Parliament that the legislation should have been amended in 2000, when the Constitution was modified.
The Constitution of the Republic of Moldova stipulates that the CC consist of six judges who are appointed for a six-year term. Two of the judges are named by Parliament, two by the Government and two by the Supreme Council of Magistrates.
