Legal system reform will start after local elections

Parliament will start to debate the reform of the legal system and the law enforcement bodies immediately after this year’s local elections. Until then, the Government will examine and table the relevant set of proposals to the legislature. Related statements were made by senior members of the three parties of the ruling alliance, who came together for a meeting of the coalition’s Council on May 16, Info-Prim Neo reports. First Deputy Head of Parliament Vlad Plahotniuc told the press that the ruling alliance will ask the Government to specify the implementation terms, costs and effects of the legal system reform. “In the many letters sent to Parliament, the people ask me why a trial lasts for so long and is not transparent. The people are afraid of the law enforcement bodies instead of feeling protected by them,” said Vlad Plahotniuc. The politician said that only a legislative initiate of the set of laws concerning the reform of the legal system is now in Parliament – the bill on the restructuring of the specialized courts. “The other bills will be submitted to the legislative body for consideration towards the middle of June,” said the First Deputy Speaker. Deputy Head of Parliament Liliana Palihovici added that the legal system reform includes the reform of the penal procedure and the civil procedure and the reform of the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime. “We also discussed the appointment of deputy ministers, but in general. The members of the ruling alliance do not have objections to naming the proposed candidates. In the next meetings, the Government will appoint deputy ministers to the rest of the vacant posts,” said Liliana Palihovici. Ion Hadarca, leader of the Liberal parliamentary group, said they agreed to hold meetings of the Council more often so as to deal with a number of urgent problems, including the reform of the local public administration in accordance with the European standards. He stressed the necessity of holding consultations with specialists in local public administration before the next meeting of the Council set for May 20. The party leaders did not come to the May 16 meeting. Among those attending were also Democrat lawmaker Dumitru Diacov, leader of the Liberal-Democratic group Valeriu Strelet, and Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar.
