Liberal Party expects AEI colleagues to designate one presidential caniddate

The Liberal lawmakers are waiting for their colleagues from the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) to name only one candidate for the presidency. After the February 23 sitting of the legislature, the head of the Liberal parliamentary group Ion Hadarca said there is one post of President and they should choose one of the two candidates fielded, Info-Prim Neo reports. “I do not want this situation to be interpreted as a ball in the field of the Liberals as if we are the ones who will take the final decision. The Liberals withdrew modestly. We showed that we depend on no faction and do not fight for posts, as it was said. We allowed the other two components of the AEI to decide,” said the MP. Ion Hadarca also said that both of the candidates are worthy. According to the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu, the Liberal Party will announce its decision after the meeting of the party’s Political Bureau. Democratic MP Adrian Candu said the members of the alliance are now holding discussions to reach a compromise. “I think that both of the candidates deserve attention. We will see how the discussions end,” he stated. Socialist lawmaker Igor Dodon said the legislative body made progress as there are two politically unaffiliated candidates selected by the alliance. “The Socialists are ready to examine both of them when the AEI puts them forward officially. I think both of the candidates are suitable for the post of head of state,” he said. On February 22, the PLDM and PDM decided that two candidates will be fielded for President – former Minister of Health and current rector of the State University of Medicine and Pharmaceutics “Nicolae Testemitanu” Ion Ababii, and former deputy governor of the National Bank of Moldova Veronica Bacalu.
