The sides remained on the same positions and the head of state is now at liberty to decide, the chairman of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu said after the December 21 consultations with President Nicolae Timofti, IPN reports.

The Democrats’ leader noted that no progress could be presented in the current round of consultations as the participants in the talks to form a ruling alliance maintain their positions. Lupu reiterated the PDM’s position that the mechanism for designating the candidate for Prime Minister, used during six years, should be kept. Under this, the candidate is fielded by the party that has the largest number of seats of MP.

Marian Lupu said that in the consultations they considered possible candidates for premiership, but the head of state asked to keep their names secret for now. Nicolae Timofti argued that he needs time to ponder over. Therefore, it is up to the head of state to take a decision as to the candidate that will be either accepted or rejected by Parliament.
