“This decision affects me neither as person nor as party leader,” the Democratic leader Marian Lupu said, commenting on his removal from the post of Speaker. “Unlike others who want to hold posts, I look at things in a different way. If Vlad Filat had come yesterday or the day before yesterday to me and had told me that he had a great psychological discomfort fueled by his vainglory and had asked me to resign, I would have offered my resignation voluntarily today. But he didn’t do it. The decision was to use a mischievous way. It doesn’t surprise me,” Marian Lupu told the press after the voting.  

The leader of the PDM said he had known about the orchestrated discussions between the PLDM and PCRM since January and that the roadmap worked out by the two parties envisioned the withdrawal of the PLDM from the AEI on February 13. According to Marian Lupu, today’s decision of the lawmakers is a signal that there will be early elections. “If early elections take place, we are no afraid. We are ready for them,” he stated.

Lupu also said that the Parliament is not functional because, before being dismissed, the Speaker didn’t pass on his duties to the Deputy Speaker. Thus, the Parliament’s sittings cannot be called and some of the documents cannot be signed. “This is another proof that the PCRM wants the legislative body to be non-functional. It the legislature is non-functional for three months, the President must dissolve it and announce early elections,” said the Democratic leader.

According to Marian Lupu, the PDM will continue to take part in the negotiations on the formation of a functional Government, without discredited persons. He warned that the current situation in Moldova, the actions staged by the PLDM and PCRM make the European integration objective and the signing of the Association and Free Trade Agreements with the EU unachievable in the short run.

Marian Lupu was dismissed from the post of Head of Parliament by 76 votes in favor.
