Marian Lupu: We set date of presidential elections to bring speculations to an end

The parliamentary alliance had to set and announce the date of the presidential elections so as to bring different speculations to an end, the chairman of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu said in the program “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

“After the March 4 Judgment by the Constitutional Court, attempts were made to misinform the people. It was rumored that no presidential elections will be held and the government will shrewdly return to the election of the Head of State in Parliament. To end these speculations and to convince society that the presidential elections will take place, we fixed the date of the elections,” said the Democrats’ leader.

Marian Lupu explained why they chose October 30 as the date of the presidential elections. “The Constitutional Court restored the people’s right to elect the Head of State, but we must adjust the electoral legislation to the Court’s judgment. A working group was set up to draft a bill with amendments to the Election Code by the end of April. We will mandatorily ask for the appraisal of the Venice Commission. To avoid any insinuations and speculations, the legislation must meet the European standards. I think these changes will take effect by the end of July. But the vacation period comes and we thus decided that October 30 is the most suitable date for ensuring a greater voter turnout,” he stated.
