“If Moldova had had the uninominal voting system, when the people elect directly the lawmakers, we wouldn’t have experienced a political crisis for three years as the MPs wouldn’t have allowed this,” Head of Parliament and Acting President Marian Lupu said in an interview for the Romanian portal Romania Ziare.com, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
The leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova considers that if early legislative elections are held owing to the non-election of the President, the Communists will be unable to return to power. He believes that the Moldovans will want to keep what they recovered during the last few years – the freedom and course for modern development and welfare – given that the former government ended with torture and financial deficit, while now Moldova sees economic growth.
If the head of state is elected, the switchover to government based on respect for the people’s rights will be completed and Moldova will give a signal that it has a formed and stable democratic power with which the chancelleries of the world can develop future projects, said Marian Lupu. He reminded that he gave up running for President and showed that life for a responsible politician does not end if he does not become head of state.
As to the Communist Party, the Democratic leader said the three votes needed to elect the President cannot come from them because this party wants the sociopolitical chaos to deepen and early parliamentary elections to take pace. According to him, the staging of protests is a sign of political agony and the Communist Party will soon dissolve into other parties, as it happened with other fossilized parties along history. Marian Lupu added that the Democratic Party is the main exponent of the center-left currents in Moldova.
