Marian Lupu’s decision is a calculated one and largely reflects the political options within the decision-making process, political analyst Viorel Cibotaru told Info-Prim Neo.
“I’ve stated it a couple of times and I think I’m the only one to say that what happened on December 16 in Parliament was a normal thing. All parliamentary factions behaved according to political logic, not trivial buy-sell thinking. Thus, Marian Lupu’s decision not to run is a calculated one”, said the analyst.
According to Viorel Cibotaru, there is a technical aspect, the political logic and the context, which need to be considered when searching for a solution. One possible solution would be for politicians to determine which one of them would gather 61 votes.
“A basic quality the candidate must have is that of being able to act as a constructive political mediator. He must be a very good expert in a certain domain, but should be skilled in as many areas as possible: politics, law, administration, foreign languages. He must provide a set of solutions for overcoming a deeper crisis – the constitutional one, to revise and reform the Constitution in what concerns the status and election of the President”, thinks Viorel Cibotaru.
The analyst says that there are more persons that meet the minimum requirements and who have abilities and political will. It’s up to the parliamentarians to agree about the guarantees that would function in concrete contexts.
On December 28, Speaker Marian Lupu announced during a press briefing he would not participate in the repeated presidential elections.
