Media NGOs say Gagauz administration wants to censor journalists

The media nongovernmental organizations of Moldova express their disagreement with the decision of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia to oblige the electronic media that will want to broadcast live the meetings of the autonomous unit’s legislative body to obtain licenses. They consider that such a decision represents an attempt to censor the journalists working for electronic media, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Obliging the electronic media outlets to get a license alongside the broadcasters that use terrestrial frequencies that form part of the national patrimony is an unacceptable initiative in a state that abides by the democratic values and aims to become part of the EU,” reads a statement issued by civil society representatives. The signatories call on the authorities to immediately intervene and ensure the electronic media’s freedom guaranteed by the national and international legislation so as to avoid infringing the people’s right to receive information and the media’s right to provide this information.
