Media Subsidy Fund to be created in Moldova

A Media Subsidy Fund will be established in Moldova. Media outlets eligible for state subsidy will be selected through a competition by a council of experts consisting of representatives appointed by the Press Council or civil society organizations representative of the media sector, representatives of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Finance. This is provided in a draft law that was given a final reading by Parliament, IPN reports.

The size of the Fund will be agreed through the annual law on the state budget. At the same time, the fund can be supplemented with donations, sponsorships and grants offered by individuals or legal entities from the Republic of Moldova and abroad, other financial sources that are not prohibited by law.

Public audiovisual media service providers, institutions financed from the public budget, advertising or erotic periodicals and those founded by political parties will not be able to claim subsidies from this fund.

The law providing for the establishment of the Media Subsidy Fund will enter into force in three months of its publication in the Official Gazette.
