Titles that appeared in time about the works of Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu and the bard himself and that can be found in the collections of the National Library of the Republic of Moldova were displayed at an exhibition entitled “Mihai Eminescu, known and equally unknown” that is devoted to the 170th anniversary of the poet’s birth, IPN reports.
National Library director Elena Pintilei said the exhibits include over 220 publications of the Library’s collections, such as rare books, facsimile editions, albums, bibliophile notebooks, books in a Lilliputian format, analysis works and literary criticism of Eminescu’s works, books translated into different languages, etc. A separate section of the exhibition centers on the translations of Mihai Eminescu’s works. “A volume of Eminescu’s notebooks – the edition edited by Titu Maiorescu in Vienna – and a small volume of poems, facsimile edition also edited by Titu Maiorescu, are significant,” stated Elena Pintilei.
She noted that Mihai Eminescu remains that poet and that name that should be studied and known, while his works are very valuable as they express the values and aspirations of this nation. “I think that alongside the great writers of the world, Mihai Eminescu occupies a distinct place. Mihai Eminescu is our star that rises each year on January 15,” said the director.
Poet, prosiest and translator Miroslava Metleaeva said Eminescu’s poem “Luceafărul” for a translator is an invariable, static universe that should be explained and transferred to another linguistic space without distorting the semantic and esthetic parameters of the original. However, the hermeneutic approach enables the translator to rethink some of the aspects of the content.
For her part, Veronica Cosovan, head of the Library’s Old and Rare Book Section, said an exhibition entitled “A soul, a heart, a destiny” was mounted as part of the section to present works of different personalities of the national culture. A part of this is devoted to Mihai Eminescu. There was exhibited a rare poetry volume that was printed in Romanian in Denmark in only 500 copies. This has a red leather cover with Mihai Eminescu’s picture in profile imprinted on it.
