The leader of the Liberal Party (PL) Mihai Ghimpu is not sure that the President of Moldova may be elected in autumn, as the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat asserted last week. He said that he does not believe in a PLDM-PCRM coalition, but if such an alliance is formed, the PL is ready to work in the opposition. The Liberal leader made related statements in a news conference on August 22, Info-Prim Neo reports. Mihai Ghimpu said the head of state will be elected according to the method described in the agreement regarding the formation of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI), which can be modified only with the consent of the leaders of all the member parties. “The agreement obliges us to respect what was signed. If it is not observed, there is no alliance. Trying to find another candidate means breaking the agreement,” he stated. He also said that currently the PL is not ready to review the agreement and the leaders of the AEI should come together and discuss calmly all the questions related to the election of the President. According to the Liberal leader, there are several methods of electing the head of state. One of them is to attract 2-3 votes from the Communists ‘who are tired of instability’. Another one is to vote in the head of state by organic law, while the third one is to amend the Constitution. Mihai Ghimpu said that they have not yet found the Communist votes because there was no unity within the ruling alliance and thus the Communists became stronger. As to the Gagauz Governor’s assertion that Vlad Filat is the most suitable candidate for the presidency, Mihai Ghimpu said it was an opinion expressed by an ordinary person, not by the Governor of Gagauzia. He announced that a meeting of the AEI will take place after the holidays, which will center on all the existing problems. The leaders of the alliance will together take part in the concert dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the proclamation of independence, which will be given at the Palace of the Republic.
