“The visit of U.S. Vice Vice Joe Biden to Chisinau is a signal showing that Moldova is a very important country for the United States. The U.S. aims to support Moldova so that it becomes a democratic country that is whole and secure within its internationally recognized borders”, stated U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Asif J. Chaudhry at a Press Club meeting on March 9. The ambassador also described the visit of the American vice president as “a historic event”, referring in particular to the public speech that Joe Biden is expected to deliver at the Opera Square in Chisinau on Friday at 2:00PM. “This visit is special because the U.S. Vice President will meet not only with the Moldovan officials, but will also interact directly with the people of Moldova. This will be an occasion for him to express his views on the bilateral relationship between the United States and Moldova, and this makes it a historic event”, said Ambassador Chaudhry. Asked about the timing of the American vice president's visit, in light of the enduring political crisis in Moldova, Ambassador Chaudhry said this period represents a perfect moment to salute the country's democratic reforms. “We admit this is a special period, when different reforms and events take place. Your country aspires to join the European Union and bilateral relations become a very important issue. The future of your people and the future of Moldova concerns us, so this is a perfect moment to salute these reforms and this advancement toward democracy”, stated the ambassador. Ambassador Chaudhry confirmed that Vice President Biden would meet with Prime Minister Vlad Filat, on whose invitation we is coming to Moldova, and with Speaker Marian Lupu. The busy agenda will make it impossible for him to meet with other key persons, including the leader of the opposition Communist Party Vladimir, specified Ambassador Chaudhry.
