Moldova will be among 150 other countries that will be uniting on September 15 for one massive World Cleanup Day. Today the Hai, Moldova! / Let’s Do it Moldova! civic movement held a press conference to share details about the event that will take place in exactly one month.
The organizers say the global event is also an occasion to raise awareness of the need to collect and recycle waste.
Taisia Camenșcic, coordonator „Hai, Moldova!”, said that the effort will rely on volunteers, which will be asked to register on the website haimoldova.md. Anyone can become a local coordinator and mobilize her or his community to engage in the cleanup, together with the local authorities, NGOs and local businesses.
Taisia Camenșcic invited everyone to participate in the event on September 15, starting at 10:00 AM. Gloves and bags will be dispensed to every participant.
Among those supporting the event is the United States Embassy in Moldova, which will help to organize training courses for local coordinators. “Citizen participation is important for every society. We think it is very important that the Moldovan youth have got involved in this project, as future belongs to them”, stated the Embassy’s Press Attaché Jonathan Wolfington.
Vlada Balica, representing a recycling company, says that all the waste collected across the country during the World Cleanup Day will be processed at a sorting factory in Chisinau. Most waste will be inorganic, including such non-biodegradable waste as plastic. She also encouraged everyone to sort their household waste.
Hai, Moldova! is part of the Lets Do It World global movement that is present in 150 countries. “On that September day, we’ll wake up in the morning in New Zealand, finish off the day in Hawaii, and at the end of it, we’ll have changed the world”, encourages the movement.
