Moldova made significant progress in negotiations with EU, officials

The sixth round of talks on the Association Agreement between Moldova and the European Union took place in Chisinau. The members of the European delegation said the Moldovan state made significant progress in a number of areas, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a news conference on Monday, Deputy Foreign Minister Natalia Gherman, who is the chief negotiator on behalf of Moldova, said the discussions on the political dialogue, reforms and cooperation in foreign policy and security have been closed. She stated that the negotiations on 21 of the 24 chapters of the economic and sector cooperation agreement are over. When all the 24 chapters are carried out, the road will open for Moldova to fully implement the legislation and main standards of the EU. “The negotiations on the Association Agreement are dynamic. There was signed the second progress report that will be presented to the Moldova-EU Cooperation Council in Brussels on May 5, 2011,” said Natalia Gherman. Miroslav Lajcak, Managing Director for Europe and Central Asia at the European Commission’s European External Action Service, told the same news conference that the signing of the Moldova-EU Association Agreement is part of the bilateral relations between the EU and the countries covered by the Eastern Partnership. He avoided giving reasonable timeframes within which the Association Agreement can be signed, saying a lot depends on how Chisinau maintains the reform implementation pace. “After this document is signed, Moldova will be closer to the EU in the political, economic, interhuman relations and other areas. Everything that has been done until now shows that a lot of progress was made,” said Miroslav Lajcak. The officials said that the next round of talks will take place in Brussels in June.
