President Igor Dodon signed a memorandum of cooperation between Moldova and the Eurasian Economic Commission in Chisinau on April 3. The Head of State signed the document even if the government disapproves of this, IPN reports.
After the signing ceremony, Igor Dodon said the document does not run counter to other agreements signed by the Republic of Moldova so far.
“A historical event is taking place in Moldova today. As a large part of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova want, today Moldova signed a framework agreement of cooperation with the Eurasian Union. The Republic of Moldova should have good relations both with the East and with the West. The Republic of Moldova cannot build an iron wall before our traditional partners. We must enter new markets, but this does not mean that we should lose the traditional markets,” stated President Dodon.
He also said that he signed a letter addressed to the administration of the Eurasian Union, asking that Moldova should be given the status of observer to this organization. The request will be examined in Bishkek on April 14 and Igor Dodon said he could be present at that event.
“We are consistent and will protect the national interests of the Republic of Moldova, regardless of the criticism and separate opinions,” stated Igor Dodon.
Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Tigran Sarkisyan said the Moldovan products are known in the Eurasian Union and the exports of these products could be increased. The Eurasian Economic Commission is ready to cooperate with the Republic of Moldova in all the areas of interest for the people and the business sector.
Earlier, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said a memorandum of cooperation between Chisinau and the Eurasian Economic Union is inappropriate, while the granting of the status of observer at the Union to Moldova is inopportune. He noted that the status of observer cannot be obtained if the Government does not ask for this.
